Where people get tripped up

The most common misconception here is that this was a "hack" in the sense of someone stealing a private key or finding a bug in the code. It wasn't. The code performed exactly as written. The failure was in the economic logic.

Many users assume that if a protocol is "audited," it is safe. An audit checks if the code does what the developer intended. It does not check if the developer's intention to accept an illiquid token as collateral is a bad idea. When capital moves quickly, the risk of these "economic exploits" spikes. First, understand the difference between a protocol halt and routine maintenance. A halt is a nuclear option. It means the validators have decided that the risk of leaving the chain open is greater than the cost of stopping all transactions. If you see a "halt" following a security report, it is a sign of extreme stress, not a scheduled update.

Second, be wary of any lending platform that allows you to borrow against "long-tail" or low-liquidity assets. If a protocol allows a token with thin order books to be used as collateral, the protocol is vulnerable to the same playbook used here: manipulate the price, borrow the liquidity, and vanish.

While we cannot fix the smart contracts of the protocols you use, you can fix how you store your assets.
